Itchy palms can prove to extremely irritating and annoying. One can get rid of itches simply by scratching on the itchy are in most cases. However, in some cases scratching either doesn’t work at all or it ends up aggravating the itch.
Some common causes of scratchy palms and feet include allergic reactions, dry skin, internal diseases, nerve disorders, pregnancy, dermatitis, eczema, and other skin diseases. They can also be viewed as HIV and diabetes symptoms and STD symptoms. Many times such itches can also result out of a reaction to drugs and even antibiotic medicines.
The body generally experiences allergic reactions when it comes in contact with specific chemicals, like urushiol which is derived from poison oak. Most people are allergic to nickel alloys as well. Mostly as these allergies get aggravated when an individual touches them, their first sign is itchy palms. Sometimes the body has such reactions when it comes in contact with pollen of some plants as well. These reactions however depend from people to people as it is not necessary that everyone’s skin be similarly sensitive to different elements. In many cases allergic reactions are caused due to a specific food item or drink that one may have consumed.
Sometimes itchy palms can also result out of using shampoos, conditioners, detergents, soaps, etc. that use chemicals that the body adversely reacts to. Further, certain fabrics like wool, nylons and synthetics can also cause the body to react in an irritable manner causing itches.
Dry skin is another major cause of skin irritation that can cause itchy palms and feet. It is results from sudden temperature swings, low humidity levels in the atmosphere, long-term use of air conditioning or central heating, and washing or bathing too much. In such cases it is very important to make sure that your body remains moisturized. Especially if you’re aware that your body has a problem of dry skin.
Various internal diseases like liver diseases, indigestion, kidney failure, anemia, cancer and deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals can also cause repeated itching. A lot of times it involves the formation of rashes and skin bumps in itchy palms or feet.
Nerve disorders like sclerosis, diabetes and herpes zoster can also be a major cause of itching.
Some women experience extreme itching in their hands and feet during their pregnancy.
In most people who have sensitive skin, itchy palms and feet may be the result or in some cases a symptom of skin disorders. There are many skin conditions that cause itchy skin and thus, ultimately lead to itchy hands and feet. These include eczema (dermatitis), psoriasis, scabies, lice, chickenpox, dyshidrosis, etc. However itchy skin isn’t the only symptom of such skin diseases. Generally such itches are mostly followed by red and irritated skin, rashes, blisters and other disease specific symptoms.
In case of HIV and diabetes symptoms, scratchy palms and feet cannot be viewed as absolute indicators of the diseases since, these are just secondary as compared to other major indicators of such diseases. Similar is the case for STD symptoms and palms.
